THE SMALL, QUAINT TOWN of our current mission was surrounded by a dense forest of trees. The disturbance had taken place the night before, so our team would stake out the area and see if there was another occurrence tonight.

I felt out the essence nearby, but nothing triggered me. Not one pulse seemed out of place. Everything in the air was crisp and inviting, suggesting I was in the company of Light creatures and humans.

I crossed my arms over my chest, thinking quietly to myself as Vedric and Bastian stood side by side, overlooking the town with the same expression.

“I don’t feel anything out of place,” I said, addressing the other two.

Vedric nodded, smirking. “Kind of what we expected, but it’s protocol to follow up on any disturbance. We’ll stay here until just before dawn, and then head back.”

Bastian sighed, massaging his temple. “You better not keep me later than three. Sunrise comes early in this part of the world.”

“Bassy a little sca-a-a-a-red of the sun?” Vedric taunted, getting a swift kick to the backside. “Dammit, Bastian, you’re lucky that Miss Ebony is here, otherwise I’d kick your Bassy Assy.”

“Don’t hold back on my account,” I offered graciously with a small grin.

Vedric cleared his throat with obvious discomfort and Bastian laughed at the troll’s expense, shaking his head. “It’s not the impression I want to leave you with,” Vedric explained, glaring at the vampire behind him.

“More like you don’t want her to see how easily I claim victory,” Bastian corrected, smiling at Vedric with a sparkle in his dark eyes.

Vedric’s expression instantly soured. “I’m better with masses. You know that.”

“Sure, sure.” Bastian offered me a wink before peering out over the quiet landscape.

I was about to speak, hoping to somehow comfort Vedric, who looked a little angrier than he should, when the air around us changed.

A sharp sensation shot down the length of my spine.

Removing my dagger, the other Guardians immediately did the same, and I pivoted to look behind us.

Their essence was unmistakable, and I knew right away we’d need everything in our arsenal to face who’d come. The darkness behind us was unnatural and a figure loomed, their shape forming inside the black around them.

Vedric shifted next to me, growing agitated, and Bastian quickly stiffened when it was clear what we were about to go up against. “What’s a High-demon doing here?” Vedric asked of his companion.

But we all knew the reason.

“Hello, little sister.” My brother’s face came away from the darkness that concealed it. “You’ve been a very bad girl.”
